Service members of the Western Army, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, stand at attention alongside Australian and U.S. counterparts during the closing ceremony of Exercise Yama Sakura 87 in Kumamoto, Japan Dec. 14, 2024. Yama Sakura 87 is the largest and most complex U.S. Army-Japan Ground Self-Defense Force command post exercise to date, with enhanced participation of the Australian Defense Force and U.S. Marines with III Marine Expeditionary Force. The goal of the exercise is to strengthen multi-domain and cross-domain interoperability and readiness between the U.S.-Japan alliance to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific.
